Nagoshi Studio is gone. The studio never shipped a single game.
Shareholders dissolved the NetEase-backed developer on October 31. As GameSpot reports, the vote later appeared in Japan’s government gazette. That makes the Gang of Dragon cancellation final.
As a Yakuza fan, this one stings.
What’s New
Yakuza creator Toshiro Nagoshi founded the studio under NetEase about four years ago. Its debut project was Gang of Dragon, a crime action game for PS5.
The studio revealed the game at The Game Awards. The trailer showed gritty visuals, brawling, and a neon-soaked Kabukicho. It also teased gunplay and car chases.
Now we know the outcome. Push Square notes the closure had looked likely for months. Reports from March 2026 said NetEase had pulled funding.
So the dissolution is paperwork on a story that already felt over.
The Timeline at a Glance
- Four years ago: NetEase backs a new studio led by Nagoshi.
- Last December: Gang of Dragon debuts at The Game Awards.
- March 2026: Reports say NetEase cut funding.
- October 31, 2026: Shareholders dissolve the studio.
How It Plays
We never got hands-on time. Still, the trailer tells us a lot about the intended feel.
It promised heavy, crunchy street combat. It also promised dense city exploration. That is the Like a Dragon formula Nagoshi helped build at Sega.
That familiarity cuts both ways. Fans wanted a Nagoshi game with that spark. Yet Rock Paper Shotgun argues the game looked too much like Like a Dragon again.
I get that take. A new studio needs a clear identity. Gunplay and car chases were a start, but they didn’t feel like a bold leap.
Even so, I would have played it. Nagoshi’s crew knows how to make a city feel alive. A rough first effort still beats no effort.
Why This Studio Collapsed
The sources don’t give a full inside story. We can only read the signals.
NetEase has pulled back from several overseas studios. Funding drying up leaves a young team with few options. A studio with no shipped game has no revenue to fall back on.
That is the harsh math of big-budget development. A flashy reveal doesn’t pay the bills. Only a finished game does.
The timing also hurts. The reveal came less than a year before the shutdown. Hype built fast, then the money vanished.
The Verdict
This is a sad ending, and a lesson in how fragile new studios are. Even a legendary name can’t guarantee a launch.
Here are my takeaways:
- Gang of Dragon will not release on any platform.
- Nagoshi Studio no longer exists as a company.
- Funding trouble, not fan interest, appears to be the core issue.
- Fans of the genre should look to the Like a Dragon series instead.
If you want that brawler fix now, grab a PS5 controller (paid link) and revisit the classics. Nagoshi’s legacy lives there.
I’ll call this one an incomplete. The pitch had promise, but nobody got to play it. Rest easy, Gang of Dragon.
