Microsoft used a single announcement to reset expectations for portable gaming gear. The new Xbox Nano controller shrinks Microsoft’s standard pad into a pocket-sized accessory. It arrives alongside Anbernic’s dual-screen handheld tease and some sobering repair pricing for Apple’s folding iPhone Duo. This story follows Xbox Nano Controller Leads.
Each story points to the same trend. Hardware makers are chasing portability, nostalgia, and repair economics at the same time.
Xbox Nano Controller Leads: Xbox Nano Controller Targets Smaller Hands and Smaller Pockets
Microsoft confirmed the Xbox Nano controller today, priced at $49.99. The company built it shorter than any previous Xbox controller.
Microsoft says the Xbox Nano controller suits younger players and people with smaller hands. It also targets commuters who want a compact pad for cloud gaming on a phone.
The pitch matters because cloud gaming keeps growing on mobile devices. A controller that fits in a jacket pocket removes a real barrier to that habit.
Microsoft has not said whether the Xbox Nano controller sacrifices any buttons or triggers to hit its size target. Reviewers will need to test grip comfort before declaring it a win for portability.
Anbernic Chases the 3DS Crowd
Anbernic shared new footage of its upcoming dual-screen handheld, as reported by The Verge. The video shows the device emulating 3DS, Xbox, and PS3 titles.
Ayaneo has sold dual-screen handhelds for years already. Anbernic only entered that market recently with the RG DS and RG DS Plus.
This new device positions itself as a direct answer to Nintendo’s aging 3DS hardware. Nintendo stopped supporting the 3DS years ago, leaving a gap for emulation-friendly rivals.
Anbernic’s bet depends on legal gray zones around emulation software. The company sells hardware, not pirated game files, which keeps it on steadier legal ground than many assume.
iPhone Duo Repairs Carry a Steep Price Tag
Apple published repair costs for the iPhone Duo without AppleCare Plus, as first noted by MacRumors. Inner display damage alone costs $999 to fix.
Battery service runs $229, a notably high figure for a routine repair. The folding screen’s complexity drives most of that cost.
Apple’s pricing effectively pushes every iPhone Duo buyer toward AppleCare Plus. Without it, a single screen crack can cost nearly as much as a replacement phone.
Smaller Stories Worth Tracking
Victoria Song’s new column describes living with an AI-generated “digital twin” for diet advice. The experiment raises real questions about how much people should trust automated health coaching.
Meanwhile, Humble Choice added Psychonauts 2 and the newest Like a Dragon game to its $14.99 monthly lineup. For backlog gamers, that bundle is hard to beat on value.
If you’re shopping for a new setup to pair with the Xbox Nano controller, a Xbox Series X console (paid link) remains a reliable home base for Xbox cloud gaming and local play.
