Five phone stories landed this week. Each one matters for a different buyer.

Starlink Mobile 5G Network Gets Qualcomm Hardware

SpaceX wants to compete with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Starlink Mobile 5G now has a chip partner for its ground network.

As reported by GSMArena, Qualcomm announced that SpaceX picked its Dragonwing platforms. The base stations will use the QRU100 and QDU100. They will also run Qualcomm’s commercial-grade Layer 1 software.

Starlink Mobile will use Massive MIMO radio units too. That technology helps towers serve many users at once.

My take

Satellites alone cannot make a carrier. You need towers, and towers need proven hardware. Choosing Qualcomm suggests SpaceX is serious.

Still, building a nationwide network takes years. I would not cancel my current plan yet.

Oppo Reno17 Series Launches November 9

Oppo confirmed the Reno17 series on Weibo. It will launch in China on November 9. According to GSMArena, stores will carry the phones that same day.

The lineup includes the Reno17 and Reno17 Pro. This is Oppo’s second Reno refresh of the year. The company has kept that twice-a-year rhythm for a long time.

What to watch

  • Whether the phones leave China
  • Camera upgrades over the last generation
  • Pricing against Vivo and Xiaomi rivals

iPhone 18 Base Model Rumors: Upgrades and a Price Hike

A Chinese leaker on Weibo shared new details. GSMArena reports that the base iPhone 18 will gain performance and battery upgrades. Those match the Pro models.

Apple announced only the Pro phones this year. Reports point to the standard models arriving in early 2027. The leak also mentions another price increase.

My take

Better battery life is the upgrade I value most. Yet a higher price weakens the pitch. This is a leak, so treat the numbers cautiously.

Apple’s wider plans keep shifting. Our touchscreen MacBook Pro roundup covers more of them.

Galaxy Buds Hearing Aid Features Reach Korea

Samsung’s Hearing Aid feature won FDA clearance in the US this summer. Now South Korea’s MFDS has approved the Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features. GSMArena says both arrive by software update.

The Galaxy Buds4 Pro and Buds3 Pro will get them. Korean rollout starts in early 2027. Samsung has not given a US date.

Why it matters

Hearing aids cost a lot. Earbuds that double as aids could help many people. Medical approval separates this from a gimmick.

If you want a pair, compare other hearing-focused earbuds (paid link) with rival options first.

Samsung Galaxy A58 Charging Speed Leaks

China’s 3C certification revealed the Galaxy A58’s charging speed. The model code is SM-A5860. It supports 45W charging, the same as the Galaxy A57.

The listing also shows no charger in the box in China. Samsung expects to launch the phone in March or April.

My take

Unchanged charging is disappointing. Faster rivals already sit at this price. Buyers should budget for a 45W USB-C charger (paid link) if the box skips one.

Takeaways

  • Starlink Mobile has real hardware backing, but a long road ahead.
  • Oppo Reno17 arrives in China on November 9.
  • The base iPhone 18 may cost more.
  • Galaxy Buds hearing features start in Korea.
  • The Galaxy A58 keeps 45W charging.

Target buyer: If you want a reliable mid-range Samsung and hate waiting for upgrades, hold for the A58. Otherwise, the Reno17 is the one to watch.
